Clean Turkey Gyros

clean turkey gyros

When I go to New York City, one of my favorite things to get has always been a gyro from a street vendor! After my most recent trip, I set out on a mission to make a cleaner, healthier version. These clean turkey gyros will hit the spot, and are 21 Day Fix approved. Yummy gyros without the guilt? Yes, please!!

What pitas to use

Joseph’s is one of my favorite brands for wraps and pitas. They contain great ingredients. You can find them here on Amazon: Joseph’s Pita Bread (affiliate link). However, they’re cheaper in the grocery store if you can find them! You can usually find them in the deli section of your local grocery store. As a general rule, you can usually find the cleanest versions of breads, wraps, and pitas in this section. Just be sure to read the ingredients, and try to stay away from foods that have “enriched” as one of the top ingredients.

Weight Watchers

Joseph’s pita’s are 1 point! For the other ingredients, I would just measure out the ground turkey (according to the percentage you use) and for the tzatziki sauce I would measure it out according to the yogurt you use. When I measured it for my dinner tonight, I had two HUGE gyros for 9 points (but I used the 85% lean turkey. It would have been lower for a leaner meat).

21 Day Fix

1 – yellow (pita)

1 – red (meat) plus 2 Tablespoons of yogurt sauce (counts as red)

1 – green (veggies optional)

Ingredients

  • Whole grain pita bread (I used Joseph's brand, which is usually located in the deli)
  • Meat:
  • 1 Tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1/8 cup water
  • 1 lb Ground Turkey
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • Yogurt Sauce:
  • 3/4 cups 1% Greek Yogurt
  • 1/2 cucumber, peeled and seeded (slice cucumber in half and scoop the seeds out with a spoon)
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1.5 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon dry dill weed

Instructions

  1. In bowl, mix together ground turkey, oregano, pepper, and salt (optional).
  2. Turn heat on to medium high in skillet, and place garlic, diced onion, and water. Cook for a few minutes until onions start to caramelize. Add turkey mixture and cook until it has been browned. Set aside.
  3. For yogurt sauce: Place cucumber into a food processor and blend just enough to mince the cucumber into small chunks. In a bowl, mix the cucumber with the yogurt, garlic, red wine vinegar, and dill weed.
  4. Serve with pita and veggies (I use romaine and tomatoes).
