young living pure protein shake review

Continuing in my series of alternatives to Shakeology, I came across some samples for Young Living’s Pure Protein Complete shakes and I wanted to give them a try. If you’ve missed some of my other reviews, you can find them here:

Young Living’s Pure Protein Complete shakes are more of a protein shake than a meal replacement shake (more on that later, but read my article on the difference between the two: Meal Replacement Shakes vs Protein Shakes). They are available in 2 flavors: Chocolate and Vanilla Spice. I was able to sample both flavors (yay!). For both shakes I used unsweetened coconut milk and ice. The texture for each shake was smooth.

What I really appreciate about the shakes are the ingredients. The ingredients are natural without artificial sweeteners. The protein is NOT soy-based, and contain a mixture of different proteins, which has been proven to provide sustained energy.

Chocolate:

The chocolate flavor was good, but it was not overly sweet. (Some people have complained that Shakeology is TOO sweet, so if that is the case for you, then you will probably appreciate Young Living’s version). If you wanted to make it sweeter, you could add half a frozen banana, or extracts to make flavor changes.

Here is their nutrition label:

Vanilla Spice:

The other flavor is Vanilla Spice. My friend told me it was similar to Chai tea (which I absolutely LOVE), and she was right. Like the chocolate, it was not overly sweet. Also, the spice flavor was not super-strong. The Vega One shake had a stronger chai flavor (however, I did not like the texture of their shakes). I imagine this would be awesome with the addition of cinnamon, nutmeg, and chai tea. I think it would also complement well with other frozen fruits.

Here’s the Vanilla Spice nutrition label:

Cost:

The cost for these shakes is $85.53 for a 18 serving bag ($4.75/serving). However, you can sign up as a member to receive the discounted price of $65 ($3.61/serving). To do so, you’d simply buy an essential oils starter kit, and then you would receive the discount on any remaining products.

From what I can tell these shakes are much more expensive than you were estimating. Per the ingredient list, one bag is only 18 servings. This almost doubles the estimated cost per serving to $4.75 (retail) or $3.61 (wholesale), since you have to purchase two bags to drink one shake per day. Please tell me I am incorrect. I am a serious Young Living fan looking for a comparable alternative to these shakes due to the cost. Let me know if you have any suggestions on a more affordable protein shake.

Jamie - You are right!! I must have calculated based on a 30 serving bag. I do like the Young Living products as well. If you're looking for an affordable shake, you would do better to look outside of the standard MLM companies (I'm not saying their products aren't great - they are just more expensive). I recently put a Shakeology alternative on my blog that is MUCH cheaper (and I use it myself!). Shakeology alternative I apologize for the miscalculation! I will update the information.

It's accurate if you use one scoop instead of two.
